What is Sin?

When talking to our kids, the word “sin” can seem so abstract.  When our kids are growing up, a lot of times we fail to define the actual word “sin”.  Recently when asking a group of 5th graders what sin was, the uncertainty in the room was palpable.  The knowledge and understanding of sin is pivotal to our salvation story and why God came to this earth as a sinless man to die for each one of us.

Sin can be defined simply as anything we THINK, SAY, or DO that hurts God’s heart and makes him sad.  Sin can also be referred to as missing the mark that God has set out for us.  When God created us He wanted perfect communion with us, but our sin gets in the way.  No matter how hard we strive for perfection we cannot obtain it because we are human.  We struggle to follow God’s law and make mistakes which is sin. Everyone sins, that is why we need Jesus!

Stop and read together:

1 John 3:4 - “Everyone who sins is breaking God's law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God.”

James 4:17 - “It is sin to know what you ought to do, and then not do it.”

Romans 3:23 - “For everyone has sinned, we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
